Gail Winifred Johnston Nelson(1937 - 2012)

Gail Winifred Johnston January 30, 1937 - November 13, 2012 Gail was born January 30, 1937 to Carlyle and Dorothy Nelson in Bakersfield, CA. She passed away on November 13, 2012. Gail had an easy going, joyful, playful, and loving demeanor that was infectious to all that met her. She attended local schools, but spent summers in Hawaii with her parents Carlye and Clara "Hilo Hattie" Nelson, where she fell in love with the culture and her step mother, Clara "Hilo Hattie" Nelson. In high school, she met the love of her life, Don Johnston when they attended East Bakersfield High School. She met the love of her life, Don Johnston, while attending East Bakersfield High School, and married in 1955. They married in 1955 and had two children, Dennis and Tari. Gail, also lovingly called Tutu by her grandchildren, was very active all her life and enjoyed sewing, knitting, jewelry making and was even taking zumba and yoga classes up until her sudden death. She has been described to the whole family as "the nicest person I've ever met." She was always kind and caring and her family meant the world to her. Gail is preceded in death by her parents Dorothy and Lloyd Snider, Carlyle and Clara Nelson and Jane Nelson. Left behind to mourn is her husband of 57 years Don; her son Dennis and his wife Stacey; her daughter Tari, son in law Larry Henderson; brother Jim Snider and sister Susan Snider-St. Marie; seven grandchildren, Jaclyn Johnston, Bryan Johnston, wife Michele, Julia Johnston, Derek Vaughn, Cameron Vaughn, wife Chrissie, Amber Arthur, husband Greg, Ricki Edwards and husband Steven; and two great granddaughters, Rilynn Edwards and Maggie Gail Vaughn as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Gail also leaves behind a great influence on everyone's life that got the privilege of knowing what a kind and generous soul she was. We will all love her and miss her. Like Gail once wrote in a Christmas card honoring her father, "Lucky to have had those before us." Now, her family and friends can be added to the list who will say the same thing about our Mom and Tutu. In honoring Gail's wishes no services will be held. There will be a Celebration of Life lunch at the home of her son and daughter in law, Dennis and Stacey Johnston, at 4300 Flintridge Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93306 on Monday, November 19, 2012 @ 12pm. Please join family and friends if you would like to share your memories. (Please note change in lunch date)
