Maxine L. Leonard(1918 - 2012)

Maxine L. Leonard September 14, 1918-September 20, 2012 Maxine was born in Wichita, Kansas and moved to Welch, Oklahoma where she spent her childhood. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Business. In 1947, while working for an optometrist in Los Angeles, she met the love of her life, Gene Leonard. On their first date, he picked her up in his brand new Studebaker Champion. While driving to the beach Maxine said to Gene that everyone was staring at his shiny new car. Gene said "No Maxine, they are looking at you because you are beautiful." They were married on March 3, 1951 and adored each other for the rest of their lives. They raised their three children in Bakersfield. Maxine helped her husband in his various businesses including Gene Leonard Furniture. She worked for the State of California as a supervisor in the Department of Rehabilitation. They lived for nearly twenty years in Tehachapi growing apples, fruits and vegetables and selling them at their roadside stand. Their wood sign on the front porch read "Leonardland. If Disney can do it, so can we." She will be remembered by her friends for her love of her black and white check outfits and stylish fashion sense. Max enjoyed her many years of friendship and service as a member of Phi Epsilon Phi Sorority. She gave generously of her time and talents to the American Association of University Women which helped young women to attend college. For several years she belonged to Bloomer Girls which was a group of senior girls that performed dance routines at various public events. She loved participating in those events with her many girlfriends. She attended the Church of St. Malachy in Tehachapi. She was one of the sweetest and most pleasant women that ever lived. She is survived by her children, Craig Leonard, Gary Leonard and Sharon Fahmie, and her five grandchildren Rachelle, Ryan, Alisha, Sara and Seth. The family would like to thank all of the people at The Park for their many years of loving care. We would also like to thank Hoffmann Hospice for making her final days as comfortable as possible. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 2:00 PM, at Greenlawn Mortuary & Cemetery Southwest, 2739 Panama Lane.
