His education was interrupted by World War II, where he was a combat infantryman in the Pacific. He was on several beachheads, including Leyte, Mindanao, Mindoro, and Corregidor in the Philippines. In 1949 he got his real estate broker's license and became a "Realtor." In 1955 he opened his own office at 407 Chester Ave., where he also handled real estate loans and insurance. Melvin is survived by his wife, Fredda Lea; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Ellis; stepson and daughter-in-law, Paul and Michelle Turner; and grandchildren, Patrick, Connor, and Samantha.
