Patricia L. Macy(2/7/35 - 12/1/12)

Patricia L. Macy Febuary 07,1935 - December 02, 2012 Whenever Patti Macy put the finishing touches on her hand-painted and fired ceramic figurines, she insisted each time on taking the smallest brush in her art box and applying an almost imperceptible dot of white paint to the eyes to give them, as she would say, "that sparkle of life that you would miss if it were not there." Those who knew Patti will say that this is not merely a reflection of the artist's craft, but of the artist herself. Patricia L. (Patti) Macy died Sunday morning December 2nd. in Bakersfield after a long illness. Patti was born to Roy and Mary Brock in Indianapolis, IN, in 1935. She graduated from Cathedral High School and attended Stephens Art College, Butler University and Purdue University, where she majored in fashion. Although she eschewed a design career in favor of raising a family, she never abandoned her love of fashion, art, crafts, sewing, and cooking?skills that she imbued into her three children and six grandchildren. She was married (since divorced) to the late F. Richard Macy in 1957, and over the proceeding 30 years lived in every corner of the U.S., from Oregon to New Jersey, Illinois to Louisiana. Always true to her Midwestern values of generosity and openness, she was as comfortable talking football with members of the Chicago Bears as she was once asking a New Orleans chef for his coveted Bananas Foster recipe. Despite her soft-spoken demeanor and diminutive 5-foot frame, she was fearlessly curious about the world and encouraged her children from an early age to be unapologetic about attempting new adventures. She relocated to Bakersfield in 1988, and lived with her longtime companion Frank Guevara both in the city and in Arvin, where they enjoyed canning vegetables and debating the outcome of their favorite TV crime shows. Patti is survived by her three children, Timothy Macy, Kelly Walters, and Kevin Macy; daughters-in-law, Lori McFarland and Zully Macy; son-in-law, James Walters; grandchildren, Chelsea, Brigid, Shelbi, Shannon, Zully, and Kristine. She is preceded in death by her brother Roy Brock, Jr., and her sister Jackie Baker. At Patti's request, the family will observe a private memorial service. www.bakersfield.com/obits
