Robert J. Self(1932 - 2009)

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Robert Joseph Self, who passed away June 11, 2009. Bob was born May 25, 1932 in Bakersfield, California to Floyd and Maude Self, attended local schools and graduated from Kern County Union High School. He attended Bakersfield College for two years - while in line to register for classes, he met a beautiful Garces High graduate named Margaret Cragin. They married on June 21, 1953 and were soon to have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. After graduating from UCLA, Bob spent 2 years in the Navy as legal officer on the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, patrolling the waters of Taiwan and China. He was discharged from active duty as a Lieutenant, and then studied law at Boalt Hall, University of California at Berkeley. After graduating from law school, Bob and Margaret returned to make their home in Bakersfield. After passing the State Bar in 1961, Bob went to work for the small law firm of Young, Wooldridge and Paulden. Within a year he was made partner and the firm became known as Young, Wooldridge, Paulden and Self. He had a love of the law and our judicial system, specializing in business law and civil litigation. His career highlights included successfully arguing three cases before the California Supreme Court. He retired from the firm in 2002 after an exemplary 42-year career. In 2008, he received the Kern County Bar Association Bench and Bar Award, given to those who "provide outstanding service to the legal profession and bring credit to the manner in which justice is administered." He was a past president of the Kern County Bar Association and the Bakersfield Racquet Club, and for many years, legal advisor to the Bakersfield Junior League. He was a board member of the Bakersfield College Foundation and the Kern County Camp Fire Girls, and a member of the Fox Theater Foundation. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Maude Self; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Daniel and Frances Cragin; and brother-in-law, Edward Cragin. He is also being welcomed into Heaven by his former law partners, John Young, Joseph Wooldridge, and Cameron Paulden; as well as dear friends, Edward Simonsen, David Moore, Don Brown, Jack Higby, Yvonne Lockard, and Scott Schwebel. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; brother-in-law and wife, Dan and Shirley Cragin; daughters, Susan Self, Linda Griess and husband Roger, Lisa Tyler and husband Paul; and three beautiful grandchildren whom he adored - Mary Margaret, Robert Jacob, and Martha Grace Tyler, who will dearly miss their "Poppy". Bob loved watching the sunset from his backyard, relaxing on the deck at Lake Tahoe, Esther's Delight at Mexicali, Tuesday Night Tennis with Art, Dick, Ed, and Ray, Law School Gang reunions, the UCLA Bruins, The Beach Boys, and a great laugh, most often occurring with his life-long friend, Don Hall. He loved life and cherished the many good times he shared with family and friends. Last year when Bob received the Bench and Bar award, his legal peers were asked to describe him. The three words that most often came to mind were "scholar", "athlete" and "gentleman". He was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be missed dearly. We know the firm of Young, Wooldridge, Paulden and Self is once again complete, and justice is now being served within the highest court. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Bakersfield College Foundation, 1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield California, 93305 in memory of Robert J. Self. Robert J.
