Russell J. Ashby(1942 - 2009)

Russell J. Ashby 1942 - 2009 Kern River Family Mortuary Russell J. Ashby 67 years old passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, CA. On Sunday, May 10, 2009 after a valiant battle with Parkinson's disease. Born in San Pedro, CA. to Estelle and Roland Ashby. He became a Boy Scout and a Eagle Scout and was awarded Eagle Scout of the year for the state of California. He had a beautiful baritone voice and a keyboard talent. He was accepted into the Coast Guard on the Athletic program and traveled from one boxing ring to another. After leaving the service he continued with his amateur heavy weight boxing. He had over 80 sanctioned matches (2 losses) and the only time he was ever knocked out was by Jerry Quarry. He became a ceramic tile contractor. He worked at what he loved for 30 years. He was named Master Tiler of the Year by the Architects Association of California and Master Tiler by the Tile Setters Union 8 years in a row. Russell leaves his loving wife of 18 years Donna Marie Ashby, sons Thomas and Jason, daughters Sonia and Andrea, stepson John and stepdaughter Vickey. Brother Wayne Ashby and wife Dialene of Denver, CO., brother Alan Ashby and wife Kathryn of Houston, TX. Many grandchildren and nieces and nephews will miss this fun loving, gentle giant of a man. Viewing will be held on May 23, 2009. at 10:00 a.m. with service following at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Panorama Dr.
