Grace Lewis Obituary

Grace Mann Lewis April 2, 1908 - February 5, 2011 It is with much adoration, we wish to honor Grace Louise Mann Lewis, our Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and friend, who passed peacefully on February 5th, 2011 at the age of 102. Grace was aptly nicknamed "Amazing Grace" by those who knew her, and was a long time resident of Bakersfield and Shafter. Grace was born on April 2, 1908 in Red Stripe, Arkansas. She moved to Shafter in 1947 from Pampa, Texas. Her loving husband, Everett Glee Mann, was married to his bride from 1926 -1961. After many years as a single businesswoman, she married Lester Lewis in 1975 and was a senior bride until 1995. The core passion in her life for over 90 years was her commitment and dedication to God. As a lifelong servant to the Lord, she taught Sunday school for many years at the Shafter Church of Christ and attended services at the North Bakersfield Church of Christ in her later years. Over the past 64 years in Shafter and Bakersfield, Grace was revered as a most loving friend, confidant, and lay psychologist. Her door was always open for a cup of tea and a chat; Grace would help you explore your dreams and passions. She made to you feel that you were the most special person in the world to her and she genuinely had your best interest at heart and inspired many friends. Grace was an exceptional homemaker, excellent cook and unequalled seamstress. She was always dressed well and loved the color pink. She was an accomplished business woman, an award winning Avon sales lady, and at one time she even sold Waterless Cookware. Grace owned her own grocery store in Texas, and owned many apartment buildings over the years. She managed these ventures with compassion, integrity and respect for all the people she encountered. Grace was always uplifting and a joy to be with whether it was around the card table or during a meal filled with family and friends. She provided many family and friends some of the "best-and-most-memorable" Thanksgivings and Christmases of our lives. In 2010, Grace was honored to be the "Queen of the Senior Olympics of Kern County". She was also presented the "Keys to the City" by Major Harvey L. Hall on her 100th birthday, and he declared April 2nd to be the official "Grace Mann Lewis Day" in Bakersfield. We are most grateful for the wonderful staff and Wayne Smith at The Hallmark of Bakersfield, who gave her such tender loving care the last 18 months of her life. We will be eternally grateful for their help. Our loving Grace was the daughter of Sarah Jane Crisp Woods of Shafter and John Edward Crisp, from Wagner, Oklahoma and John Woods of Shafter. Grace was blessed with her son, Harold Mann, her "best" friend and daughter-in-law, Dortha Mann, and daughter, Raynetta Harris Bogue. Her brothers Edward "Pat" Crisp and Emmett Crisp are waiting for Grace in heaven. Being survived by brothers: Kelley Crisp and John Kenneth Woods and sisters-in-laws: Eileen Crisp, Gilda Crisp, Wilma Woods, Barbara Crisp and predeceased Alta Crisp. A supportive large family of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren still carry on her genes and love. She is honored by four grandchildren, Pamela Olson, Doris LeHoullier, Herbert Mann and Daralyn Harris Christensen. Her 11 great grandchildren are Christopher Webb, Kerry Malone, Kristen Webb, Moira Ireland, Erica Mann, Tyson Mann, Peter Malone, John Webb, Owen Malone, Mitchell Mann, Janeil Mann, Harris Bradley Christensen and Ella Grace Christensen. And, finally her great-great grandchildren are Eric Mann, Eddie Ireland, Callen Ireland, Emeila Grace Malone, Brody Ireland, Emma Mann, Benjamin Webb, Liam Ireland, Tucker Mann and Zhoe Malone. She also is survived by her step-daughter, Mary "Sis" Lawson, and step-son, Charles Lewis. She will be missed by us every day. We have all been so blessed to have spent so many wonderful times with Grace. We are all so fortunate to have basked in the presence of one of the finest ladies on this earth. May her golden spirit continue to serve as an example for us all as we continue on our life's journey. We are comforted to know our "Amazing Grace" has returned to her Savior and Heavenly Father and will be waiting for us to join her there. Memorial Service will be held at the Shafter Church of Christ, 850 Minter Ave, Shafter, California, 93263 on Saturday, February 12th at 11:00a.m. Graveside service to follow at Shafter Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcomed to share a private and personal moment with Grace on Friday, February 11th from 2:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter located at 844 E. Lerdo Hwy, Shafter CA 93263. 661 746 6314 We are grateful for you sharing with us all the flowers, cards, emails and your special memories with Grace. The Family will treasure these mementos forever. My Precious Gramma: It has been a year since you left this earthly home to relocate to your heavenly home. I have missed you so much. So many times i wanted to call you just to hear your voice. There were times i wanted to again hear your sage advice. Other times i just wanted to tell you i love and miss you, and hear you say how much you love me too. Someday we will get to see you again, so until then will cling to and be comforted with the many memories you planted in our hearts. Thank you for loving each of us unconditionally and for being there when we needed to talk, or needed a hug. There is a tremendous empty place in our lives without you. The attached photo is one of my favorites of you. I look forward to the day i see you again. Love & miss you XXOOXXOOXXOO

My Dearest Aunt Grace,
Tomorrow you will celebrate your first birthday in heaven. I know this will be a delight for you since you've been ready to go home for many many years. I'm guessing you will be saying,"If that don't beat all!" or "I'll say to my time!" when angels and loved ones, (like Grandma Woods and my Daddy, Patrick Crisp) sing "Happy Birtday" to you! I'll be singing it here for you too because I will never forget your bright smile and cheering laugh whenever we'd sing for you in this world. How you loved to laugh!! And this year, you will not miss a single word or note because NOW you hear perfectly!! I'm so happy for you (and sad for me and others who miss you) but it won't be long.... we'll sing together again. I love you Aunt Grace. You're a treasure!!!! Your devoted niece and twin, Marleen

My Aunt Grace-

Assuredly, Aunt Grace knew God's peace long before her promotion. Her eternally positive spirit spoke of a heavenly eternity. Her unconditional love for others was testimony to God’s inexhaustible love for us. Aunt Grace made each of us feel like we were uniquely and wonderfully made, just as the Lord designed us to be. When we would visit Aunt Grace she would say to me, "Who is this movie star? I can't possibly be related to someone so beautiful." The fact is, I couldn’t fathom how I was related to someone whose intrinsic beauty radiated with such stunning intensity. Aunt Grace was a precious part of our family and her memory will be continually cherished. She may have made me feel like a princess, but Aunt Grace was always the family treasure.

With all my love and gratitude,
Sarah Jane Manley

As a young teenage girl trying to live the Christian life faithfully, Grace Mann was to me like a light shining in the darkness! She provided the loving example of a person who was clothed in Jesus Christ, but living in a fallen world. She showed us what it is like to admit weakness that trusts in the forgiveness of our precious Lord! And she showed us how that Lord's Spirit helps one to grow more into His likeness every day! And with all this, she was refreshingly "human," with a great sense of humor (as I remember her!) and a kind, encouraging word for everyone who knew her. She was just the essence of the Bible's description of a Christian woman. I have been blessed all my life by my memories of Grace Mann! May God bless all the dear family!

Grace was a very special lady. My daughter, Stella, never knew her great-grandmother, Daisy (Grace's cousin), and knew Grace as "Grandma Grace". My mother, Glenda, thought of Grace like a mother, too. Grace filled the gap and holds a truly loving place in our hearts. We are all blessed to have known her!
