Adela Abdul December 21, 1942 - September 21, 2012 The brightest star in our heaven has dimmed with the passing of our beloved sister, Adela Abdul, on September 21, 2012. Adela died of metastatic breast cancer in her hometown of Bakersfield CA at the home of her little sister, Penny Garcia, surrounded by the love of her family and the prayers of her many, many friends. Adela began her life on December 21, 1942, as her handsome young father, Cayetano Garcia, was asked by his beautiful young wife Vicenta, to name their newborn daughter. So with great pride, he named the baby "Adelita" to honor the mythical young woman warrior of the Mexican Revolution who was said to have cooked and cared for the Mexican soldiers as she fought by their side. And true to her namesake, Adela was the brave big sister. She ventured beyond the safety of the nest to explore the world and to bring back to her family all the riches she discovered in living an active and creative life. Adela worked hard to pay her tuition to graduate from Garces Memorial High School class of 1961. A stunning young woman, Adela enrolled in beauty school after graduation and became a legendary hair dresser for the last 51 years. Her razor haircuts were perfection, always effortless and refined. Updos were classic, elegant and always special. The magic in her hands was a gift from God she shared with her clients and she deeply appreciated the loyalty her clients showed towards her. Adela's hard work was rewarded and her kindness and grace impacted everyone fortunate to meet her. Her home was filled with mementos from her worldwide travels and her gourmet kitchen constantly fed lucky neighbors, family and friends. Divorced young, Adela acquired a second career and in 1985 she became a Realtor in Ventura County. She worked hard to buy properties and to eventually own her current, joyful home in Oxnard CA that overlooks the boat filled marina, the sky and the sea. The void left in our lives is immense. Like a true warrior, Adela inspired and protected us. Adela was greeted in heaven by her parents along with her dear brother Daniel Garcia and her faithful sister Rosemary Moreno. Along with her sister Penny, Adela leaves behind her sister Aurora Catania and husband Robert, sister Margaret Ritorto and her children Gina and Michael Ritorto, and sister Tina Garcia and husband Jeff Wiebe. Also left behind are several nieces, nephews and dozens of heartbroken friends. Memorial Mass will be held Friday, September 28, 2012 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 124 Columbus Street in Bakersfield CA at 12:00 noon. . Father Perry Kavookjian will officiate. A reception will immediately follow at the home of her sister Penny Garcia. A private ceremony will be held later to scatter Adela's ashes into the sea that she loved near her home in Oxnard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the building fund for St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Church, 12803 Mont Batten Place, Bakersfield CA, 93312. www.bakersfield.com/obits
