Alberta Jo Chase Norris Obituary
Born on October 20, 1932 to Cecil and Lucille Chase was Alberta "Jo" Chase Norris, a born-and-bred Bakersfield resident whose big heart and even bigger personality touched many throughout her lifetime.
Graduating from Bakersfield High School '50, Jo was an ardent Driller supporter (through which she would proudly show at Driller events with her two Driller granddaughters), as well as sporting her spirit for her beloved University of Oregon Ducks, where she graduated from in '54 and was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. After university she met the love of her life Sharon Norris, whom she married on January 29, 1955. They were able to enjoy 59 1/2 years of being together preceding Sharon's passing over a year ago. Over the years there would be a comical mixup of a who's who, in trying to decipher who was Jo/Sharon. Together they would raise three children, John, David, and Pam.
Jo's life revolved around involvement and devotion to numerous community causes including serving on the Panama Union School Board for 12 years, as well as Junior League, St. Paul's Alter Guild, PEO Chapter HY, and a founding member of the Town and Country Garden Club. Her love and loyalty was a testament to her strong, lasting friendships, while her hobbies were a testament to how good she was with a stitching needle or any cooking utensil. A cook who would give Julia Child a run for her money, Jo's kitchen never ran short of delicious smells, the tastiest dishes, or her key ingredient, butter. Her dishes were not just known for their flavors, but for the love and care she put into each of them, just as she loved and cared for so many around her. As a temporary Cayucos resident, Jo's love for the ocean and beachside community flourished over the years, as evidenced by those who came to see her.
Jo passed away peacefully September 22nd in Bakersfield while in the presence of loved ones. She is survived by her children John (Dirk), David (Alison), Pam Norris Somes (JP), and grandchildren Philip Kibbey (Michiko), Elise Norris, Nicholas Somes, and Emily Norris.
