Andrew James Marquez Jr. June 7, 1948 - May 24, 2013 Andrew James Marquez Jr., 64, of Lakewood, CA passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013 after a short battle with cancer. He was born on June 7, 1948 to Andrew and Isabel Marquez. He graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1966. He is survived by three sisters Frances Villanueva (David) of Tehachapi, CA, Patsy Hernandez (Art) and Debra Rivera (Juan) of Bakersfield, CA. He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews. Andy worked for International Transportation at the Port of Long Beach from 1978 until he retired in January 2004. He stayed on the port working as a temporary worker for the Longshoreman's Union, 1LWU OCU Local, 63, until March 2013. Outside of work, Andy held strong to the teaching he gained growing up in the Catholic faith. He was a member of the St. Matthew Parish community in Long Beach. Being interested in the wellbeing of the Long Beach and Lakewood communities, he would often attend and organize charity events. Community sports leagues gave him the chance to remain physically active throughout his life, beginning with his early days in the exciting world of banked track Roller Derby. The last twenty or so years he spent playing and coaching in softball teams. He loved working with new players, especially those who were "always picked last". He will be missed by all the friends he made playing in these leagues. A Rosary and Mass will be held on Friday, June 7, 2013 at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 672 Temple Ave., Long Beach, CA at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery, 4400 Cherry Ave., Long Beach, CA. www.bakersfield.com/obits
