Archie Jo Tompkins

03/23/1932 - 10/02/2014 Obituary
Archie Jo Tompkins was born in Lindsay, California, on March 23, 1932, to Joseph and May Shields. The young family, including younger sister Shirley, moved to Bakersfield where Archie grew up. At a fairly young age, Archie accepted Christ and lived her entire life as a loving, Christian example to her family and friends. She was selfless and always put others before herself in every way. She was truly beautiful inside and out and had the most beautiful smile.
In 1953 she married the love her life, Steve Tompkins. The two were inseparable for over 61 years. In 1959, daughter Lora was born followed by daughter Leslie in 1961. She became a full-time homemaker shortly before the birth of her first daughter. Archie was a wonderful wife and mother and an especially great cook.
Archie was a lover of music and had a beautiful soprano voice which she used most of her life in church choirs. She was also a gifted pianist. This gift was passed down to her daughter Leslie and grandson Patrick Simon. One of the highlights of her life was accompanying her family to New York City to watch her grandson Daniel Simon perform in the Kingsburg High School Jazz Choir at Carnegie Hall.
Archie and Steve took their young family to Hawaii for the first time in 1968. This was the first of dozens of trips to the Hawaiian Islands. Archie and Steve had many travel adventures together including a trip to New Zealand. They also played golf together several times a week for many years.
Archie entered the pearly gates of heaven on October 2, 2014, after a brief illness. She is now smiling and singing in heaven.
Archie was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and May Shields, and her in-laws, Earl and Alta Tompkins. She is survived by her husband Steve, daughter Lora Emmerling and son-in-law Paul, daughter Leslie Simon and son-in-law Tim. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Green and grandchildren Daniel Simon and his wife Kirsten, Patrick Simon, Zachary Emmerling, Jacob Emmerling and Katie Emmerling.
