Arthur Green Obituary

Arthur Wayne Green 1924 - 2010 Arthur Wayne Green went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2010. Art lived a full and active 86 years dedicated to God and his family. Art was born March 2, 1924, in Wright, Kansas, to Charles and Stella Green. Art was the middle son of the three Green boys. Living the farm life during the Great Depression made an impact on young Art. He was always grateful for what the Lord provided. Art was drafted into the Army and served in Iceland during World War II. He had many Army jobs, his least favorite being KP duty; which he felt he had more often than his fair share. Art enjoyed sharing his wartime adventures with his family and friends. Upon returning to the United States after the war, Art enrolled at Kansas University (Go Jayhawks!), married the love of his life, Johnnie Charlene Wright in 1949, and obtained his degree in Pharmacy the following year. Art and Johnnie settled in Bakersfield in the early 1950s to raise their two daughters, Nancy and Mary. In 1956 Art and Johnnie opened Green's Pharmacy on South Chester. Running a successful neighborhood drug store, raising his girls and faithfully serving as an Elder in his church were Art's passions. He was a Pharmacist for 59 years, fully retiring at age 82. Art was quite the handyman. Whether it was fixing things around the house, or church, wood-working or leather-crafting, Art always had projects on his "to do" list. His favorites being those he did for and with his children and grandchildren. He even learned how to make balloon animals! In his later years, Art developed a love of astronomy, the LA Lakers, gummy worms and even a mild affection for Yum Yum the cat. Art was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gerald and Robert. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Johnnie; their daughters, Nancy Sampson, husband Gary, and Mary Green; grandchildren, Sara Harrington, husband David, and Jon Sampson, wife Jennifer; two great grandchildren, and numerous friends and extended family. Art was such a kind and gentle man. He loved the Lord and served Him faithfully. He was a loving and devoted family man. Art always found time to help his neighbor and serve his community. Words cannot express how much his family will miss him; but they are rejoicing that Art is with his Lord and Savior. We will meet again. Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel on Kern Canyon Road, Wednesday, September 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. Graveside to follow. www.bakersfield.com/obits

Art will live in my heart all the days of my life. He was a wonderful uncle, great father and a fantastic husband. Being part of this family, especially in my earlier years, helped shape me into the adult I am today. Dear Art. You will be missed and I will always treasure my memories and my photos of you. May God continue to bless and be with my Aunt Johnnie and the rest of the family. I charish all of you.

Grandpa Art was a wonderful man and will be missed. I would have loved to have known him better, but I see him in my husband and I'm grateful for the legacy of love he leaves behind.

Art was truly a special person. I have fond memories of Art coming in to learn my pharmacy system. Each Friday he would come in and we would reminisce about the good old days and Green's Pharmacy. Art was a good friend of my late father and always spoke highly of him. May God bless Johnnie and family at this most difficult time. With our prayers and God's blessing to all, Tim Chapman and Family.
