Ascension "Chonita" Martinez May 7, 1920 - June 20, 2013 Surrounded by her loving family, Ascension "Chonita" Martinez passed into eternal rest on Thursday, June 20, 2013. She was born on May 7, 1920 to Lucas and Panfila Padilla in Los Sauces, Guanajuato, Mexico. Chonita and her family immigrated to the Bakersfield area when she was three. She earned her 8th grade diploma from the one-room Keene Elementary School. At the age of 22, she married Atanacio "Tano" Martinez. For more than 20 years, they owned and operated "Tano's Market" at 306 E. 10th St in Bakersfield. Later, Chonita worked at The Saddlery, until she retired in 1984. Chonita was preceded in death by her husband Atanacio "Tano" Martinez, her parents Lucas and Panfila Padilla; sisters Eleanor and Rosie Marquez, Nellie Pena; brother Jess "Chuy" Padilla and her son-in-law Jesus Acosta. She is survived by her sons and daughters Ramon "Vito" Martinez, Ph.D. (wife Betty), Gilbert Martinez (wife Josie), Tomas Martinez, Ph.D. at CSUB, Dolores Acosta (husband Jesus) and Cathy Rodriguez (husband Randy). Her brothers and sisters include Teresa Padilla, Nettie Sanchez (husband Juan), Evelyn Montaño (husband Felix), Louie Padilla (wife Dolores) and Juan "Johnny" Padilla. She had 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is especially thankful to her longtime caregiver, Leticia Domínguez - De parte de toda la familia y de todo corazón, le damos las muchísimas gracias a Leticia Domínguez por su lealtad, cariño, y amor que le mostro a nuestra madre, hermana y abuelita. Memorial services will be held in Bakersfield at Basham Funeral Care, 3312 Niles St on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 5pm with a Catholic Rosary at 6:30PM. Catholic Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 601 E. California Ave on Wednesday, June 26 at 10:00AM, followed by her burial at Union Cemetery, King St and Potomac St. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to CSUB Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund. www.bakersfield.com/obits
