Barbara "Delores" (Atencio) Hembree June 24, 1943 - August 6, 2013 Delores was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, the first daughter of Joseph and Lucia Atencio. Delores was preceded by her parents, Joseph and Lucia Atencio, her brothers: Luis, Abe, Adolpho, and her sister Luci. She is survived and remembered with love and affection by her husband of 51 years, Johnson, her sons: Joseph, Jeffrey, James (Lorrie); her grandchildren: Jonathan, Joshua, and Jared; her brothers and sisters: Jacobo (Joyce), Tony, Albert, Alicia, Margaret; and her sister-in-law, Marna. Delores attended Jefferson Elementary, Washington Junior High, and East Bakersfield High School, graduating in 1962. Delores met her husband Johnson while in high school. They married March 5, 1962. They left immediately for Virginia Beach, Virginia to report for his assignment in the U.S. Navy which he served for 20 years. She lived in many places around the world, Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, Guam, Tennessee, Scotland, and finally settling in Fontana, CA, where she lived with her husband for 34 years. Delores had a great passion for traveling. Delores and Johnson spent the last 14 years pursuing that passion, traveling to many countries in South America, Asia, and Europe, never forgetting to bring family and friends souvenirs. Her favorite destinations were her safaris in Africa, her riverboat trip from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, and the Amazon River and tributary cruises. She greatly enjoyed visiting the great waterfalls of the world, Iguazu Falls, Argentina/Brazil, Angel Falls, Venezuela, and Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe. Delores will be greatly missed by her family and friends; however, as her life here on Earth has ended, she has now begun an everlasting life in Heaven seated next to the Lord. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at San Clemente Mission Parish, 1305 Water Street, Bakersfield CA at 9:30 a.m. August 30, 2013. Delores will be laid to rest at Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin CA at 1:15 p.m. August 30, 2013. A celebration of Delores' life will take place at her childhood home from 3:00 p.m. until midnight August 30, 2013.
