Barry Schulz Obituary

Barry Wayne Schulz April 11, 1944 - September 16, 2010 Born in San Francisco, California, the son of Beatrice and William Schulz, moved to Bakersfield in 1950 living out his life in this community. He enjoyed growing up on a ranch in North Bakersfield and attended Norris Grammar School. The youngest of three boys, Barry was part of a trio known for their talent on the baseball field. He was a baseball and football standout at North High School graduating in 1962. After high school Barry went on to play baseball at Bakersfield College. At BC he met the love of his life, Gail, and they were married in 1968. After BC he began his fire service career in 1967 with the Kern County Fire Dept., retiring in 1999. He wanted that same rural experience for his family that he had treasured in his youth, so they built a home out in the country in 1979. One of his greatest joys was being involved with his daughter's sports activities and mentoring her as she grew up. The many friendships he developed in the fire department extended beyond the station to the golf course, the great outdoors for fishing and hunting and his garage. Throughout his life he relished fabricating and building street rods and classic pickup trucks. Being an avid nature enthusiast, his favorite places to visit in their RV were the Western states, the High Sierras and the Rocky Mountains. He is survived by his wife, Gail; daughter, Brooke and husband Alian; brother, Robert and wife Susan; brother, William and wife Marilyn; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Roberta and Jerry Zaharris. He will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Ravi Patel, Susanna Bell and the nurses and treatment staff at CBCC for their support and care over the last 13 years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 9. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barry's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity. www.bakersfield.com/obits
