Bert Lawrence Beene Obituary

Kind and gentle Bert died unexpectedly April 7, 2016, of a cardiac event at age 86.

Bert Lawrence Beene was born in 1929, in Porterville, California, to Thelma Mae Topping and Theodore Everett Beene. Although the family moved to various locations in California, as his father sought work during the depression and war years, Bakersfield was always "home." Bert graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1947 and attended Bakersfield College. He spent his teens working in the family jewelry store on Baker Street in East Bakersfield, and received his certification as a journeyman watchmaker at age 20. T. E. Beene Jewelers, located a block north of the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, provided the required monthly calibration and repair of watches carried by railroad employees. In 1949, after a 2-year courtship, Bert married Phyllis LaMoyne Stuart, whose family lived near the jewelry store.

The six day work week of a family jewelry business and the booming oil industry in Kern County, attracted Bert to go to work for the Bankline Oil Refinery on Rosedale Highway (later becoming Signal Oil & Gas, then TOSCO Petroleum). He was hired as an instrument and electrical technician, and eventually became supervisor of the instrument and electrical departments. After retiring from TOSCO Petroleum, Bert worked at the Kern Oil Refinery, retiring again in 1991. After their retirements, Bert and LaMoyne were able to spend more time at their vacation home in Morro Bay, and relocated to the central coast community in 1997.

Bert was an avid hobbyist. Over the years, he took part in the shooting sports, amateur radio, and his passion, hypnosis. He was a certified clinical hypnotherapist.

Bert was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, his pets, road tripping, and a good game of cribbage.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Theodore Everett Jr. "Ted," and son Daniel Lawrence Beene, M.D. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis LaMoyne, son Joel Anthony Beene, M.D., of Flint, MI, and grandchildren, Lauren Cookingham Beene, M.D., (Frank Tedeschi) of Cleveland, OH, Patricia Anne Ackland of Irvine, CA, and Michael Chandler Ackland of Santa Clara, CA, as well as his four-legged constant companion, Honey. At Bert's request, there will be no funeral.
