Bertha Ann Coombs Lawrence February 24, 1926 - December 12, 2012 A descendant of the Renfro, Dwight, and Coombs families- early farmers in Rosedale- Bertha Ann Coombs Lawrence was born in Bakersfield on February 24, 1926 to William McKinley and Adelia Dwight Coombs. She attended local schools, graduating from East Bakersfield High School in 1944. Since her mother died through complications shortly after giving birth, Bertha was raised for much of her childhood by Charles and Ethel Coombs McClain, her paternal Aunt and Uncle. She met Leo D. Lawrence while working at the U. S. Post Office. They were married on August 4, 1947. Together they shared 57 years of marriage and three children. She was a stalwart member of Trinity United Methodist Church in East Bakersfield having served as President of the United Methodist Women with whom she was active on the local and national levels. She was a delegate to District and National Conferences of the UMC and received the Bishop's Award in 1996. She also served as President of the North of the River Women's Club as well as being active in various other organizations. She worked for two decades at Lane's and Crites' Jewelers in East Bakersfield. She is preceded in death by husband, Leo; son E. Porter Lawrence; and brother, William (Bill) Coombs. Survivors include daughter Pamela Havale and son-in-law George of Santa Margarita, CA; son, The Right Rev. Mark Lawrence and wife, Allison of Charleston, S.C., daughter-in-law, Marty South of Bakersfield; 11 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren in California, Utah, Pennsylvania and South Carolina all of whom will miss her kind spirit, abiding faith and thoughtfulness toward others. She died at her daughter's home in Santa Margarita in the early morning December 12, 2012 after sharing grace-filled time with family. A service of Christian burial will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church at the corner of King and Niles Streets in Bakersfield on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Flowers or Memorials may be given in her name to Trinity United Methodist Church, Bakersfield 93305.
