1928 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Betty Jo (Sprague) Whittemore Obituary
Betty Jo Whittemore (Sprague) March 27, 1928 - October 15, 2013 Visitation, Sunday October 20, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 10:00 am Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel for Betty Jo Whittemore 85, who passed away in Bakersfield on October 15, 2013. Betty was born on March 27, 1928 in Cromwell Oklahoma; she was the youngest of 9 children. After moving to Bakersfield in 1942, Betty attended Kern County Union High School (BHS) and worked at the California Movie theater on Chester Avenue. After graduating high school she became the secretary to the President of Bakersfield College where she met her husband of 54 years Bob Whittemore, who had recently moved to Bakersfield from Anaheim to attend college after serving in WWII. After a few attempts, Bob, dawning a red beard for the "Whiskerino" contest eventually persuaded Betty to go on a date to a BC football game. They had a brief courtship, fell in love, married and started their family. After a period of time, Betty went back to work for Kern County where she served for 20 years, retiring from Kern County Superior Court. During their retirement years, Bob and Betty enjoyed many trips to Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas and the beach. They also developed a passion for horse racing after parternering with friends in owning thoroughbreds. This experience created great memories for the family during race day at Santa Anita Race Track. Betty had a true love for the arts including painting and music and enjoyed many joyful hours gardening at home. Betty's greatest love in in her life was her husband and family. Betty is preceded in death by her husband Bob, son-in-law, Alan Zachary and is survived by her 3 daughter's and sons-in laws: Becky and Steve Sinclare, Peggy Zachary, Rhonda and Jeff Barnhard all of Bakersfield. Grandchildren and great grandchildren Joey Zachary (Gavin), Jennifer & Jason Cantrell (Jackson and Romy), Seth and Kristen Sinclare (Sydney) and Lindsey Sinclare. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Betty's care givers Rose Caballos and Carolynn Worthington and to Optimal Hospice for the excellent care. Also a special thank you to Dr. Harold Baer. In lieu of flowers, please donate to . Hillcrest Memorial Park www.bakersfield.com/obits
