Betty Joan (Betsy) Williams Obituary
We have lost an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and teacher today. Betty (Betsy) Joan Williams passed away with her family at her bedside on April 14, 2015. She was born Betty Joan Brown in Pasadena, California on October 4, 1928 to Stanley Keller and Genevieve Dorothea Brown. She graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1949 with a B.A.. She taught Jr. High School in Petaluma, CA from 1949-1950, deaf education in Bakersfield, CA at the Aurally Exceptional Center from 1966-1969, taught and was the department head of deaf education at Bakersfield High School from 1969-1972, and was a private remedial reading specialist in Bakersfield, CA from 1956-2010. In 1968, she created and patented The Williams Language Kit. She was married to Robert L. Williams from 1950 until he passed away in 2008.
Betsy was an exceptional wife and mother. Her true passion was tutoring, teaching thousands of children and adults to read, which brought her great joy for more than 60 years. After a busy afternoon of tutoring and preparing a homemade family dinner, she coordinated transporting and carpooling her 5 children to their various extracurricular activities. She loved books and amassed a library of thousands of books, which she eagerly shared with her family, friends, and students. She caught the genealogy bug in the 70's and spent a tremendous amount of time and energy researching her family tree. Betsy had a passion for paper dolls and had an extensive collection. For years she hosted her 'Paper Doll Party' during the holidays. Her numerous grandchildren adored her and loved spending so much of their childhood in her park-like backyard, complete with a full jungle gym and basketball court. She read them books, taught them manners and proper grammar, and loved them unconditionally.
She is survived by her five children, Robert S. Williams and his wife Susan, Laurel McMahon and her husband Terry, Steven Williams and his husband Dennie, Linda Gutcher and her husband Tom, and Michelle Cantrell and her husband Matt. She has 10 grandchildren: Patrick, Shanda, Laura, Sarah, Robby, Jaclynn, Jacob, Bryson, Tyler, and Hannah, and one great grandchild: Asher. She is also survived by her brother Kendrick Brown, his wife Helen, their children Linda and Michael, and grandchildren Katrina and Kyle.
Special thanks to all of Betsy's caregivers from Around the Clock. Not enough can be said for the loving care each one of you brought to our mother's life. You extended the longevity of her life greatly. Your tender care made spending her last years at home possible. We are truly grateful.
