Betty Lois Hannagan Obituary
Betty, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, was born in Taft, CA, September 17, 1923, and passed away July 10, 2015, at the age of 91 at her home in Roseville, CA, with her family by her side.
Jobs in the oil fields brought Walter L. Richardson and Clara Kofahl to Taft from Boliver and Licking, Missouri. They married in Taft and had four children. Betty was two when the family moved to Bakersfield where she graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1940. She worked most of her life beginning at Bakersfield Hardware and as a school secretary and school librarian until she retired.
On December 30, 1943, Betty married Robert A. Hannagan in Pueblo, Colorado. Robert, "Bob", was from Bakersfield and had enlisted in the Army Air Corps becoming a B-24 pilot in the Pacific theater. After the war, they settled in Bakersfield where they raised their two daughters, Suzanne and Carol. In 1963, Bob's work with the Southern Pacific Railroad took them to Walnut Creek, California, where they lived for 38 years. In 2000, they moved to Lincoln, California, to be closer to their children.
Betty and Bob traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe. However, Pacific Grove was always their favorite vacation spot. Betty's interest in genealogy took her to Missouri several times with Bob and Suzanne. She and Bob spent many hours' playing cards and telling stories with friends over the years. Bingo was a highlight for her at Sierra Point as well as reading the paper daily.
Betty is survived by her daughters Suzanne (Phil) Foster and Carol Hannagan, her grandchildren Ben Foster and Amy (Will) Hassinger, her great granddaughter, Charlotte Hassinger, her niece Lynette Stanley and her family. Her husband of 67 years preceded her in death in 2011.
Graveside Services will be held in Bakersfield at Union Cemetery (730 Potomac Ave.) in the Garden of the Roses Friday, July 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VITAS Hospice or a hospice of your choice.
