Billy DeWitt Coodey

Billy DeWitt Coodey was born in Porum, Oklahoma, the second eldest of eight brothers and sisters, to DeWitt and Ava Coodey. The family moved to the Wasco and Shafter area when Bill was about ten years old.
Bill accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior while a teenager. He served God faithfully as Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Song Leader and Deacon in the Potomac Mennonite Brethren Church and the Shalimar Baptist Church. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang many solos in church and at weddings. He loved classical music.
Bill met Jeanette Gilbert in biology class at Shafter High School. After graduating from high school, Bill attended Pacific Bible Institute in Fresno. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War. after returning home and being honorably discharged, Bill and Jeanette were married in the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church on September 12, 1952. They would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year. Bill retired from the Housing Authority of the County of Kern after 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette, and sons, Billy David (Charlene) and Dale Richard. Infant son Stephen Gareth Coodey and granddaughter Angelique Ferguson preceded him in death. Surviving grandchildren are Christie Carter (Jerry), Brandi Sutton (Chris), Joel Coodey (Crystal) and Kevin Clark. Surviving great-grandchildren are Darren Carter, Jerrid Carter, Ethan Carter, Ella Jeanette Carter and Cody Sutton.
Dale took wonderful care of his father the last few weeks of his life. A special thanks to Optimal Hospice Care. You were all wonderful.
Visitation will be held at Mission Family Funeral Home Wednesday, July 30, 2014 between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. A military graveside service will be held Thursday, July 31, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Bakersfield National Cemetery.
