Calvin Goehring July 3, 1929 - March 16, 2013 Calvin Marvin Goehring, 83, passed away March 16 at his home in Shafter, CA. He was born in Menno, SD to Emil and Paulina (Mettler) Goehring. He is survived by Marie (Kniffen) his wife of 64 years, his sons Clark (Nancy) and Ralph (Judy), son-in-law Robert Edson; 8 grandchildren, Trent (Naomi), Kyle (Megan), Blake, Simon, Evan and Jason Goehring, Calvin (Katie) Edson, Darcy (Jacob) Watson; 1 great grandson, Kaleb Goehring. The Lord blessed Calvin with a rich life! In 1934, Calvin's family moved from South Dakota to Shafter and began farming. Calvin graduated Shafter HS in 1947. In 1942, the US Gov't acquired the family farm for the German POW Camp. Calvin also worked with his brothers in Edison and Cuyama Valley and moved back to Shafter in 1953 to farm for himself. He was active in Shafter 20-30 Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Kern County Farm Bureau, Richland Co-op Cotton Gin, and Ranchers Cotton Oil. Calvin was an active member of Ebenezer Reformed Church (Shafter) as an elder, deacon and teacher for 68 years, and the Congregational Bible Church (Shafter) for 10 years. Calvin was a pioneer in Kern County's almond industry and in 2008 received the Shafter Chamber of Commerce's Award for Agriculture for his accomplishments in farming. He farmed cotton, alfalfa, cherries, kiwis and almonds. Calvin enjoyed taking his grandchildren and visitors to the farm, holidays with family, training his farm dogs, his German heritage, growing different crops and driving through the Western states. Calvin was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Edson, sister Olivia Preszler and brothers Gideon, Alfred and Ewald. A memorial service, under the direction of Peters Funeral Home of Shafter, will be held at the Congregational Bible Church of Shafter on Saturday March 23, 2013 at 11am. Family visitation is scheduled for Friday March 22, 2013 from 4-8pm at the Peters Funeral Home in Shafter.
