Carl Edwin McCallum Jr. 73, of Wasco, passed away Sept.18 2014 at his home, surrounded by family, after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
Carl was born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Carl and Bernice McCallum in 1941.He moved with his family to Wasco in 1946. He lived the remainder of his life in Wasco, graduating from Wasco High in 1959 and Bakersfield College in 1962. Carl was a member of the first graduating Fire Science Academy held at Bakersfield College by the Kern County Fire Department. He married Gari Hager in 1963 and they went on to have a son and daughter.Carl worked as an engineer for the Kern County Fire Department for over 27 years, until his retirement in 1996.
In his retirement Carl loved spending time with his four grandchildren who were the light of his life. He was rarely seen around town without at least one grandchild in tow and when he was not with them people would commonly ask them where their grandpa was. He also got great enjoyment from making pomegranate jelly from the pomegranates he grew. He loved giving his jelly to family and friends and they were happy to receive it.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Bernice McCallum and his son, Christopher McCallum. Carl is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Gari McCallum, daughter Kathy Brown (Danny) of Wasco and grandchildren Christopher, Evan, Connor, and Emma Brown. His sisters Mary Leverington (Ken) of Springdale, Arkansas, Jane Stover (Bob) of Coco, Florida, Lois Ernst (Earl) of Bakersfield, and brothers Clay McCallum (Linda) of Dallas, Oregon, Cliff (Beth) of Murray, Utah and sister in law Janice and brother in law Wayne Richards of Poway, California as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Carl has touched many lives with his outgoing nature and will be deeply missed.
Special thanks to Optimal Hospice for their care and kindness in his final weeks and his good buddies Mike Robinette and Gary Roskam for their friendship and caring.

A visitation will be held on Monday Sept. 22 from 4-8:00 PM at Peters Funeral Home in Wasco. Services will be held Tuesday Sept. 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Griffith Ave Baptist Church at 402 Griffith Ave in Wasco. Interment will follow at Wasco Memorial Park.
