Catharine Lee Speer was born in Potsdam, N.Y., where she was active in the First Presbyterian Church. 1955 Cathy graduated from Potsdam High School. While a student there, she played four years on the men's high school golf team.
In 1959, Ctahy received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grove City College after majoring in History and Political Science.
In 1958, Cathy married Willis C. Miller and they lived in Grove City, PA. The Millers had two sons , Dale and Jeffrey, both of whom had muscular dystrophy. Seeking a warmer climate for the children, they moved to Shafter, CA, in 1967. Cathy taught English at Shafter High School from January 1968 to 1975. During her tenure there, she developed a course called "Sports Literature" which became a favorite with students.
After the death of Dale in 1975, and Jeff in 1976, the Millers moved to Bakersfield. Her husband predeceased her in December 1986.
Cathy became a stockbrocker in 1981, and retired from Smith Barney as Vice - President for investments in June 2006. She moved to Partridge Knoll in Canton, N.Y., where she lived for 17 months. In October of 2007 Cathy moved back to Bakersfield.
Her hobbies included sports, especially golf, reading, attending plays and concerts, and visiting museums. Cathy was active in the following: Seven Oaks Country Club, Buena Vista Women's Golf Club, Frederic Remington Art Museum, The Blue Mountain Lake Museum, The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History, The West Kern Oil Museum, The Bakersfield Museum of Art, The St. Lawrence County Historical Society, and the First United Methodist Church of Bakersfield.
She is survived by two sisters: Sarah (Sally) Zegers of Ridgecrest, CA, and Geraldine Puchlerz (Tom) of Missoula, MT, nephews and nieces Michael Zegers (Jennifer), Alice Zegers (Abe), Kim Whitesell, M.D. (Dan), Molly Puchlerz Young (Matt), Megan Puchlerz, DVM, Mark Benson (Ann), grand-niece Victoria Zegers, and grand-nephews James Zegers and Henry Young.
Cathy passed away August 30, 2015, in Bakersfield She will be greatly missed by her many friends and her family.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the 1st United Methodist Church, 4600 Stockdale Hwy., Bakersfield, CA 93309.
