Charles Albert Ross Charlie Ross Obituary
Charles Albert Ross "Charlie" July 4, 1918 - November 25, 2013 Born on July 4, 1918 in Dexter, Missouri. Passed away peacefully at home in Laguna Woods on November 25, 2013. At a young age, Charles moved from Missouri to Bakersfield with his parents, Charles Robert and Lillian M Ross. After graduating from Kern County Union High School (now Bakersfield High), he attended and in 1940 graduated from the College of Business Administration at UCLA . He worked in public accounting until his active duty during the Second World War with the United States Navy from 1941 to 1946 where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He then served in the Naval Supply Corps Reserve. When Charles returned home to Bakersfield he met and married his wife of sixty years, Margaret Ann ("Peggy") Bergford, who had moved to Bakersfield in 1945 from her hometown, Minneapolis, MN, to take a position as a Clinical Medical Technologist with Kern General Hospital. Charles and his father set up Ross & Son , engaging in the real estate insurance and loan business. Charles also did real estate loan appraisals in the Bakersfield area. In 1952, Charles and David Laba opened California Finance Company on Chester Avenue. In time, Charles and David moved on to real estate development and investment and continued their long term business partnership until David passed away in 2008. Charles was one of the original members of the Bakersfield Country Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite. Charles always wanted to see "what was on the other side of the hill" and he and Peggy traveled the world together in search of new places and experiences. After Peggy passed away in 2006, Charles moved to Laguna Hills in South Orange County to be close to his only child and daughter, Barbara. Charles was predeceased by his brother Eugene and his sister, Peggy Eileen. Charles is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Earle, grandchildren Jen, Mark and his wife Christina, Melia and her husband Michael and four great grandsons, Mason, Jonah, Logan and Braden. Charles and Peggy were faithful members of St. Luke's parish for many years. A memorial service will commence at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 9th, at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 2671 Mount Vernon Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93306. www.bakersfield.com/obitsR
