Charles Switzer, 80, passed away on November 24, 2015. Born August 28, 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Ollie W. Switzer and Dorothy L. (Batton) Switzer.
He was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. While stationed stateside as a General's Aide he filled his free time as a Cub Scout Leader in St. Louis, Missouri.
After discharge, he attended and graduated from Purdue University with a Master's Degree in Language. Upon graduation in 1965 he moved his family to Bakersfield, California for his first professional job opportunity as an original faculty member teaching French and Spanish at West High School where he remained until 1994 when he transferred as an original faculty member to Ridgeview High School. He was the Spanish Club Advisor throughout these years and helped make lasting memories for his students during trips to Mexico. During this time he also worked nights at Bakersfield Adult School teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). In 2007 he retired as a full time high school educator. He continued his love of teaching at California State University, Bakersfield while also substitute teaching for the Kern High School District for approximately another four years.
In 1965 he and his wife became and remained lifelong members of First United Methodist Church. Over the years they enjoyed many activities such as traveling, square dancing, and bowling. They also opened their home to many youth in need as well as foreign exchange students.
He always involved himself in helping others. A few examples of this selfless giving is Boy Scouts, mentoring youth of the church, Habitat for Humanity, delivering food to those in need, volunteering at every opportunity, accepting officer positions within non-profit organizations, and donating to numerous charities helping people and animals.
On September 7, 1958, he married Mary Ellen (Sutherlin) Switzer. She preceded him in death on December 29, 1995.
He is survived by his son, Philip Switzer and wife Linda, Bakersfield, CA; Two sisters, Charlene (Switzer) Stratton, Indiana, and Jacqueline (McLeaster) Coers, Florida; One brother, Charles Richard McLeaster, Indiana; grandchildren, Kaylee Switzer, Joshua Jones, and Tiffany Jones; multiple nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Patricia McLeaster, Mary Ellen (Switzer) Allen, and Harold Switzer.
A Memorial will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 2:00pm at First United Methodist Church 4600 Stockdale Hwy.
