Charles Stephen Zawila Obituary
Charles Stephen Zawila August 9, 1945 - October 11, 2012 Charlie was born in Eatontown, New Jersey to Bill Bernet and Hilda and was adopted by his step-father Teddy Zawila when he was 5. The family settled in Bakersfield when Charlie was 10. Charlie graduated from South High School in the class of 1963-1964. He still kept in touch with many of his high school classmates and dear friends at their monthly South High lunches at Mexicali. Charlie always had a love for cars and was a member of the Banshee Car Club of South High. Charlie married his high school sweetheart, Sandi Haney, on February 12, 1967. They were married for 45 years. They had 2 daughters Kellee and Krista. Charlie always treated his girls like "princesses." Charlie was a welder for 25 years working in the oil fields and later opened Zawila Construction with his brother, George Zawila. In 1993 Charlie followed his passion of antique collecting and opened Central Park Antique Mall. Here he met many dear friends and people who shared his passion for nostalgia and antiques. Charlie and Sandi got to travel to many fun destinations together including Hawaii, Mexico, New Orleans, Alaska and New York. Although Charlie was a loving husband and devoted father, his true calling was to be a Grandpa. He had 4 grandchildren that were the light of his life. His life revolved around going to baseball, football, soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, cheerleading and tennis games. He was their #1 fan. Papa was his name and "SPOILING" was his thing. Anyone who knew Charlie knew how much he loved his grandkids. We will miss "Papa Charlie." Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Teddy and Hilda Zawila, father, Bill Bernet and Grandmother Hildaburg Charles. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sandi, daughters Kellee and Frank Maitia, Krista and Cary Wright, grandchildren Frankie Maitia, Kody Wright, Cassidy Wright and Marco Charles Maitia and brothers Bill and George Zawila. Thank you for the overwhelming love, prayers and support from family and friends. We have been so blessed with an outpouring of love. A Celebration of life will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Wednesday October 17 at 10 am. Please join us in celebrating Charlie's life. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hoffman Hospice. Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary www.bakersfield.com/obits
