Collena Smith, 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at Carrington of Shafter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Smith. Collena is survived by her son, Jack Allen Smith, three loving grandchildren, and six wonderful great-grandchildren.
Collena was born in Pierce, Oklahoma, to Cecil and Odis Kaylor. She was one of seven children. Brothers R.C. and Raymond have passed away. Still living in Oklahoma and California are brothers, Robert, David, Danny, and sister, June.
In 1936, during the Great Depression, 21-month-old Collena and her family boarded a Greyhound bus and journeyed to Bakersfield from Oklahoma. A true "Dust Bowl baby." Collena attended General Shafter Elementary School and in 1952 graduated from Bakersfield High School.
Collena later married John Smith, who had recently been in the Navy and was working as a brakeman for Southern Pacific Railroad. She and John had one child, Jack, and resided in Bakersfield all of their lives. Collena spent her years lovingly caring for her husband and son, attended the Nazarene church, and was a true and faithful Christian.
Jack and Debbie would like to express their appreciation for the many years of love and care provided to Mom by the wonderful employees of Carrington of Shafter. Additionally, towards the end of Mom's time with us, she was also blessed to receive very compassionate care from the dedicated nurses of Hoffmann Hospice.
