1926 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Cornelius Van Leeuwen was called to his Heavenly Home on September 16, 2016, as he was surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in McFarland, CA, on August 28, 1926, to Gerrit & Jacoba Van Leeuwen. The second of five children, he was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Adriana and Nellie. He is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Patsy, brother, Henry, and sister, Jennie; his three children, Jill, Gerrit and Richard; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Van served his country in the Army Air Corps from August, 1944, until he was honorably discharged in October, 1945, at the end of World War II. A recent highlight for Van was taking an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the military memorials. He owned and operated dairies in Southern and Central California for 25 years. After retiring, he worked at the Kern County Fair's dairy birthing center for 26 years. He was active in the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America's Tulare Chapter for 32 years and loved to tour with the 1935 Chevy Coupe that he'd lovingly restored. He was a member (and volunteer extraordinaire) at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bakersfield for 32 years. He was an avid reader, a true man of God, well-loved and respected by his family and all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 24, 11:30AM, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 4500 Buena Vista Rd, Bakersfield. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. John's Lutheran Church (address above) or Hoffman Hospice, 8501 Brimhall Rd, Bldg 100, Bakersfield, CA 93312.
