Curtis Gene Hayes March 4, 1957 - June 11, 2012 Curtis Gene Hayes was born on March 4, 1957 in Bakersfield California to Richard and Arvilla Hayes. He attended local schools including BHS where he made many friends. Following high school, Curtis became a skilled welder and pipefitter, working on numerous local pipeline projects. In 1980, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and regularly attended Calvary Chapel where his was known as 'Huggy Bear' for the warm welcomes he offered to all. In the early 1980's, Curtis moved to the central coast and spent several years working on the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant then returned to Bakersfield before moving to Portland Oregon in the mid 1990's. He loved the beauty of Oregon and resided there until his untimely death on June 11, 2012. Curtis is survived by his parents Richard and Janice Hayes, Arvilla O'Shea, sisters Marilyn Hayes, Christine Hayes and Brenda Greenwood and nieces Kate, Laura and Emily Greenwood. Curtis is also survived by his especially close friend Lori Hauptman-Girard. Curtis had many friends in Bakersfield and Portland who will also miss him dearly. He had a great smile and enjoyed making people laugh. He was kind, sensitive and always gave great hugs - hence the nick-name 'Huggy Bear' followed him wherever he went. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 2 PM at St Francis Church, 900 H Street, in Msgr. Lahey Hall. www.bakersfield.com/obits
