Debra Cunningham Obituary

Debra Ann Cunningham 1952 - 2010 Debra Ann (Abney) Cunningham, age 58, passed away at her home in Bakersfield on December 7, 2010, attended by her loving family. Debra was born April 21, 1952 in Bakersfield to V.L. "Pete" Abney and Jane Margaret Kurtz Abney. She was their youngest child and only daughter. Debra is survived by her devoted husband of 32 years, Terry Cunningham; daughter, Lysa Luna; honorary son, Aaron Bowers; granddaughter and special light of her life, Isabella Luna; soul sister, Jackie Kurtz; friend and mother-in-law, June Crowder (all of Bakersfield); brothers, Raymond Abney and wife Caroline of Parker, CO, Joe L. Abney and wife Paula of Edmund, OK, and Larry Abney and wife Beth of Las Vegas, NV. Also of special note are her numerous friends and family who will miss her deeply. She is preceded in death by her parents, both of whom she selflessly cared for during their own battles. She was a giver, putting aside her own needs to care for others. She was known for her sense of humor, quick wit, strength of character and confidence, even if it was of the "Fake It Til You Make It" variety. Debra was sustained in life by the love of her husband, daughter, granddaughter and sister, and a pack of ornery dogs. She loved traveling, especially to Hawaii and the coast. One of her favorite things was being able to smell and hear the ocean while she read. Swimming with her granddaughter, watching kids splash in the pool, visiting with friends and family on the patio and holding a dog in her lap, these are the things that made her smile. We will miss her humor, compassion, and love for good people and animals. She asked that no services be held. Instead, a small gathering to celebrate her amazing life will be held at her home. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter. www.bakersfield.com/obits

9 years ago you left me. It was extremely hard those first 4 years. It was so hard to not be able to call you at 7AM to have our morning talks. The sound of your voice always calmed me. You always knew what to say. If either of us was having an issue we managed to get through it with each others help. But now, even though you are not physically here, I still talk to you daily and know that you are listening. Was that you that woke me at 4:36AM 2 days ago. I heard the 2 knocks and my name being called twice in a row. I feel your presence around me all of the time. The shadow out of the corner of my eye. The front door opening to let in fresh air. Till we are together again Sister! Love you.

I wanted to call you SO bad today, mom. Actually, every day, but today was especially bad. It's been raining for days. Remember how we used to sit and listen to it? I cannot fathom the rest of my life without you. I love and miss you more than I can say. My sweet mama. I hope you're resting.

This is like the third time that I'm gonna attempt to write this.
I miss you so much, and i still can't believe that you're gone.
I'll never forget you aunt debi, there is no way, you were like my other grandma. I never knew it was possible to hurt so much, but apparently it is. I'm trying so hard but sometimes my emotions get the best of me. I never got a chance to tell you how much you ment to me or how much I loved you and it sucks. I just wish I could have you back, and there isn't a day that passes where you don't cross my mind. I just miss you sooo very much!

I always enjoyed Debi's e-mails - She always made me smile. She was so caring and sweet to me. Debi will be greatly missed, but she will always live in the hearts of those that love her.-Tanya (NY)

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal....
Debbie, you were such a loving and adoring mother. You were always so sweet to Lysa's friends--even when we were up to no good! You have left a memory in my heart that will never be erased...

A great sadness has drifted into my soul. I will be lost without the friendship and love of Debi. Should there be anything that you need you may call on me and I will do my best to respond to your needs as I believe Debi would do in her presence. My love to all family and friends. Let's keep her memory alive by making contributions to the organizations she supported(ie. Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, and A.S.P.C.A.) Much love, Jackie
