Delores Johnson left this world on February 11, 2015, surrounded by her family, after a brief, unexpected illness. She is survived by her son, Jerry DeLaurie of Burbank, California; daughter, Denise Hicks (Larry), and granddaughter Abi Hicks of Raleigh, North Carolina; and granddaughter, Celeste Johnson of Destin, Florida. She is also survived by her sister, Wanda Wheeler; niece, Deborah Ramirez; and niece, Margaret Oakes of Bakersfield, California. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Charles Joshua Johnson; husband, Charles Johnson; and sister, Lupe Ramirez.
She worked for the Kern High School District and retired after thirty years of service from Bakersfield High School. Upon retirement, she began to devote her time to others through her dedicated volunteer work at CASA and the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, where she worked in the Surgery/ICU waiting area. The happiest times of her life were spent with her children and grandchildren. She was a woman of immense resilience and strength, respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Mercy Hospital ICU & 2nd floor for their excellent care and compassion.
Funeral services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304, on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Greenlawn Southwest, 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield CA, 93313. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Education Fund in honor of Delores Johnson.
