Don Nighbert

1924 - 2018 Obituary Condolences

1924 - 2018

Don was born February 10, 1924, in Bakersfield, California, to Hattie Fry Nighbert and Freal Nighbert. He attended Bakersfield High School and was a Realtor since 1947.

He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force, stationed in Burma (Assam Valley) and made several trips piloting planes to China, carrying supplies and equipment to the servicemen stationed there.

During one of these missions, his plane went down over the Irrawaddy River during the night, his parachute catching in a tree where he was unconscious until morning. Cutting himself down in the morning, he had a broken back. Later he was rescued by Merrill's Marauders and carried in a makeshift stretcher made by putting poles through the sleeves of his leather flight jacket.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge for over 30 years, and was an avid handball player, hunter, and fisherman.

He and his wife of 55 years, Juanita, loved traveling and visited over 110 countries of the world.

He was preceded in death by his father, Freal Nighbert; and mother, Hattie Nighbert; sister, Velma Lee Selby; brother, Joe Nighbert and wife Margie.

He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita; nephew, Ted Nighbert and wife Donna; niece, Margie Jo Ramos; a daughter, Michelle and adopted son, Paul; great-niece, Janessa Eurto; and great-nephew, Travis Nighbert; favorite cousin, Frank Simon and wife Diane.

Travel on, my sweet beloved. You will be missed forever.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. We would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Riverwalk Clairbridge, especially Martha and Petra, for their loving care these last years. Also many thanks to longtime night caregiver, Amelita Basualdo.
