1943 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Donald or Don as some knew him passed away on September 12, 2016. Don was born in Reno, Nevada on February 9, 1943, to Regina and Donald Thompson Sr before moving to Bakersfield at a very young age. He attended Standard School and then North High. After graduating High School he joined the US Army, and served his country proudly in Vietnam for two tours as a Crew Chief with the 101st Airborne Division, upon returning stateside he was stationed at many bases throughout the US, and four years in Germany. After leaving the Army he embarked on a career as a Surgical Tech, working at various hospitals, including Kern Medical Center before retiring in 2013. He made many friends while working at KMC.
He was a big Condors fan, having bought season tickets since moving back to Bakersfield in 2002. He often joined other fans on the smoking patio at the Rabobank during breaks to discuss the team.
He supported the Bakersfield Shockerz youth travel baseball team, who his grandson played for, earning the title from the team and parents GPS (Grand Pa Shocker). The team will sorely miss him.
Don is survived by son's Donald III and Mike from Bakersfield, daughter- in-law Donnetta, grandkids Donald IV, Trevor, Meghan and an unborn great granddaughter, as well as his sister Marilyn, along with several nieces and nephews.
