Doris Jean (Snider) Smith

Obituary Condolences

Doris Jean was born May 24, 1924 in Gould, OK to Carl and Thelma Snider, the oldest of three children. She grew up in Hollis, OK where she enjoyed playing basketball and was very active in 4H, winning many awards for her sewing skills. After high school she attended OU for a short time before choosing to complete administrative training instead. In 1944, she married John Patrick Smith II and they had two sons, John Patrick Smith III and Ted Smith. In 1963, she and her boys moved to Shafter, CA and then to Bakersfield in 1965. Doris truly "loved Bakersfield" with all her heart and repeated that phrase often. Doris spent 20 years working for the Welfare office where she met some of her dearest friends. She also drove part time for Hertz car rental and loved the adventures it provided. After she retired, she spent several years helping care for her mother and running "Jeans n Things" in Hollis, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She absolutely loved life and always made the best of every situation with her optimistic, outgoing and friendly personality; she was always "just great." She spent her life serving those in need. Doris was the epitome of unconditional love.
Doris passed away peacefully on June 12, 2015 at her home in Bakersfield, CA after a very brief illness. She is preceded in death by her mother, Thelma (Husband) Snider, father Carl Snider, sister Billie Jo Hamilton and brother Larry Snider. She is survived by her sons John Smith and wife Sue Jean, Ted Smith and wife Bobbie; grandchildren Cheryl and Micah Nilsson, Jeramie and Megan Smith, Tedra and Chris Alexander, Steven Smith, Michelle and Scott Hill, Curtis and Celina Maynard, Janie and Dennis Hicks, as well as 18 great grandchildren and her dear nieces.
A graveside memorial will be held at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 9am.
