Dorothy Mae Pfeifer Obituary
Dorothy Mae (Gill) Pfeifer was born May 15, 1926 in Bakersfield, CA to Douglas and Zelma (Goodman) Gill. Dorothy attended Standard Elementary School before the family moved to Taft. She graduated from Taft Elementary School in 1940. Back in Bakersfield, she graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1944. She was a stellar student, active in the National Forensic League, Treasurer of her senior class and member of the Valkyries.
She met Army air cadet Stephen Pfeifer, Jr at a Minter Field U.S.O. dance. They married September 14, 1944. While Steve flew in the Pacific Theater, Dorothy gave birth to their first son. Upon his return, they settled their growing family in Bakersfield and became founding members of OLPH Catholic Church. It was there that Dorothy led the Woman's Alter Society and then became the first president of The Women's Guild. Her efforts in a committee established the Cabrini League which then started maker Program for low income families. Her continued commitment to health care for seniors became her life's focus as she worked as an Activities Director in health care facilities until 2008. An avid Bridge player, she owned a professional Bridge Club in Bakersfield. Even in her 80's she challenged master minds online across the globe.
Dorothy passed quietly at home December 20, 2013. She touched many lives. No one went without a coat or new school clothes or a meal if Dorothy was around. We will miss her unconditional faith, the strength of her beliefs and stubborn will to rival the greatest of Generals.
