Dorothy Marie Holland, born July 13, 1930, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 16, 2016. Mom was born in Delano, California, and raised in Pond. She attended Pond School, then known as Pondham, and Delano High School, where she sang in the choir, was a majorette, yell leader and a football queen. She married Dad, her high school sweetheart; they settled in Pond, farmed, and raised a family. Mom did it all, a wife, mother, the books for the farm; she even hoed weeds in the cotton fields if needed. She was also a great cook! On any given day, she was in the kitchen cooking and made the BEST chicken and dumplings! Mom loved singing; she was always singing. When we were small, she would sing while she was cleaning or driving in the car. If she wasn't singing Patti Page, she was singing duets with Dad. When she rocked the many babies, they all heard "You are my Sunshine." Even after strokes affected her ability to speak, she was still able to sing in that beautiful soprano voice. A favorite, the simple children's song "Jesus Loves Me," and she was willing to sing it to anyone who would listen. Together Mom and Dad raised five children: Danny (Maureen) Holland, Hilmar, CA, Diana (Randy) Timmons, David Holland, Kathleen (Lionell) Thomas, and Stephanie (Rodney) Evans, all of Bakersfield, CA. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Gene K. Holland; parents, Robert and Vestell Williams; stepmother, Kate Williams; infant daughter, Julie Ann; grandson, Michael Shawn; her sisters, Bobbi Jo Hammond and Wanda Lee (Albert) Galbreath.
Mom had a great smile and knew how to make you feel special. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Behind every good man is a good woman.
Funeral will be at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel on March 22, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at Hodel's, and burial at Delano Cemetery, Delano, California. For condolences please visit: Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest
