Dorothy Marie Peters Obituary
Dorothy Marie Peters January 17, 1934 - October 6, 2012 Dorothy was born in Bakersfield, California to Tony and Mary Armas. She was raised with a deep appreciation and profound pride in her 100% Portuguese heritage, her father having immigrated from the Azores Islands. She graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1952. She looked forward to every class reunion, serving on all of the planning committees with her classmates, The Magnificent Eight. She met the love of her life, Ken Peters, during the summer of 1951. After Ken returned from the service, they were married on her parents' wedding anniversary, December 26, 1954. They were blessed with six beautiful children. They enjoyed traveling the world, seeing the Azores, the Vatican and cruising with "Padre C's Pilgrimages" She loved spending time at Pismo Beach with family and friends. The Fourth of July was an annual tradition, complete with matching outfits. She loved the Portuguese festival honoring St. Anthony in Pismo, as well as Easter, summer vacations and many get aways. This past summer she took her entire family on a wonderful vacation to Hawaii where memories of good times with her will last a lifetime. Everyone looked forward to Fat Tuesday, when she would prepare a Portuguese feast along with hundreds of Portuguese doughnuts for family and friends, a tradition her family will continue in her honor. She kept a beautiful home, which she decorated for every holiday, especially Christmas, with her tree in place on December 1st. She loved entertaining, making every event a party. Having been raised a devout Catholic, Dorothy loved her faith. She served St. Francis parish and school for many years; she was a member of the altar guild, school mother's club, made candy for the fiesta and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Attending Mass, spending time at church in prayer was always important to Dorothy. Her example of faith has been a gift to her children and grandchildren. God blessed Ken and Dorothy with a loving marriage of almost 58 years. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Kenneth, children; Eric and wife Cindy, Ken Jr. and wife Tonja, Keith, Lisa Kotz and husband Bill, Stephanie Tobias and husband Jason, nineteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is reunited in Heaven with her precious baby Michelle Marie, her parents, Tony and Mary Armas, her sister Betty Ann Armas and her daughter in law Lori Peters. Thank you for the overwhelming love and support from family and friends, with a special thanks to her lifelong best friend, Margaret Schulte, for her unwavering love, devotion and her tender care of Dorothy. Rosary will be held at St. Francis Church 900 H Street, Thursday October 11, 2012 at 9:30am with Mass at 10:00am. Interment to follow the Mass at Greenlawn Cemetery, 3700 River Boulevard. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Francis School or Garces Memorial High School. www.bakersfield.com/obits
