Dorothy Millard Obituary
Dorothy Grace Millard was born in Clovis, CA on St. Patrick's Day, 1918 to Methodist pastor, George Otis, and Carolyn Harwell. For the past 9 years she resided at Rosewood Retirement Community where she died peacefully in her apartment. Dorothy moved to Exeter, CA in 1932 with her family when Rev. Harwell was assigned to the Exeter Methodist Church. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1935 and married Earl Millard, dairyman and farmer, later that year. Dorothy embraced the country lifestyle and was a loving wife and mother of four children. The Millard ranch became a favorite gathering place for family and friends. Dorothy loved singing in the Methodist Church choir, was a soloist, and active in the church women's activities. That love extended as well to other places they lived. After 24 years, the family moved to a ranch near Porterville then to Fresno to be near her parents. Earl and Dorothy moved to Ventura in 1973 where they enjoyed the coastal environment. After 59 years of marriage, Earl passed away in 1995. Dorothy moved to Camarillo to be near daughter, Donna, then to Bakersfield to be near daughter, Patricia.
Dorothy is survived by children and spouses: Larry Millard (Edith) of Fresno, Patricia Graffius (Ron) of Bakersfield, Donna Hoopes (Larry) of Camarillo, and Norman (Kathleen) of Corona. She is survived by ten grandchildren: Stan Shelbourne (Suzanne), Laura Sommer (Sean), Jeff Shelbourne (Sarah)Mike Hoopes, Jerry Hoopes (Lorrie, Robert Millard (Lesli), Mindy Copeland (Gabe), Bryan Millard (Monica), Heather Tatman (Erich) and Brandyn Millard. There are 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters, Allene and Merabelle, brothers, Dave and Edwin, and grandchild, Heidi Millard. The family is grateful for the loving care given to Dorothy by the staff of Rosewood Assisted Living; Optimal Hospice; Priscilla of Interim HealthCare, and special friend, Gene.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2 p.m. at First Congregation Church, Real Road and Stockdale Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kern County Library in Dorothy's name to be used to buy CD books; or to Optimal Hospice, 1315 Boughton Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308.
