Hewes, Dorothy W. 1922-2013 On January 30 2013, Dorothy W. Hewes died peacefully in San Diego. She was born in Illinois to Raymond and Maude. In 1943, after receiving her BA on Home Economics, she enlisted in the Marines where she served as a Staff Sergeant stationed in California. Dorothy married David Hewes, her husband of 53 years, in 1947. While a 25 year resident in Bakersfield, California, Dorothy was instrumental in the design and creation of The Bakersfield Play Center and eventually completed her Ph.D. in the field of Early Childhood Education. She was employed by Cal State Bakersfield, and then at San Diego State University, becoming a Full Professor and Professor Emeritus. Dr. Hewes published several books, authored many articles and was an internationally recognized consultant and lecturer on Early Childhood and its history. She showcased her many talents and varied interests, which ranged from world travel and history to art, through her participation in a multitude of organizations. Dorothy is survived by four of her children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband David and son Robert.
