Douglas Craig Obituary
Doug passed away peacefully of pancreatic cancer surrounded by family and friends on April 15, 2014. Chapel and graveside services will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, 10:00 a.m. Greenlawn Mortuary Park, 3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield, CA 93305.
Doug was born March 3, 1942 in Madison, Nebraska. He grew up in Bakersfield where he graduated from East High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Air force where he served as a MP in Alaska for one year. Then, he transferred to Sacramento, CA.
After his honorable discharge, he was able to support his young family by working as an attendant for Douglas Oil Company. At the same time, he attended night school at Bakersfield College. He received his B.S. Degree in Criminology. Doug was employed by the Kern County Department of Probation. He retired after 30 years of service mentoring the minds and hearts of troubled youth.
Retirement was adventurous. Doug and Sue became "cruisers" along with their friends Ron and Peggy Kelso. They traveled to exotic places. St. Martin Island was his favorite. He shared his love of fishing with day trips to the Kern River and Lake Isabella with his kids. He loved watching his grandkids play team sports. He was the loudest cheerleader in the bleachers! He and his son, Terry were avid Fantasy Football participants. They would get together on Sundays to discuss their rosters and "spoilers" during the game. He and his daughter, Shelley would often watch a Yankee game, or discuss how well the 49ers were going to play during football season.
Doug enjoyed having family barbecues. He experimented countless times making crockpot surprises. He was best known for his Jack Daniels sausages, but not to outdo himself, he could make a mean honey-mustard ham on the Farberware. Friends would drop in on a whim. Dad and Sue's door was always open. He and his life-long friend, Jerry Garland would play chess and talk about old times.
He would spend what he called quiet time with his three dogs: Sammy, Buddy and Whisky at his feet while simultaneously watching sports on Direct TV, listening Bob Seger on the stereo, and checking on a facts report on the Consumer Report website. He was also an avid e-mailer. He would E-mail jokes to his circle of friends, including his 1st ex-wife, Jo whom he remained friends with throughout the years. The "Viper" has signed off!
Dad was the heart of our large family. He was a man with many titles: husband, father, step-father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue of 25 years, daughter, Shelley Messerschmidt, son, Terry Craig, and wife Linda of Bakersfield, and youngest daughter, Krista Campbell of Three Rivers, CA; 5 grand children: Joseph Solis, Aric Craig, Jordan Craig, Jordan Pettite, and Jessi Pettite; 4 great-grand children: Blake Craig, Jade Messerschmidt-Ash, Hayden Martinez, and Kaine Solis; and extended family: Jim, Missy, Maddie and Will Dawson; Kim Dawson; Brett, Margaret, Emily and Chrissy Dawson; Mark, Dee, David, and Claire Dawson; and Curt Ford.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents Cliff and Lora Craig and grandson, Justin Messerschmidt.
