Douglas Eugene Simons Obituary
Douglas Eugene Simons October 1937 - June 2013 Douglas Eugene Simons awoke in the comforting presence of his Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday June 19, 2013, having passed away gently in his sleep after a brief but noble battle with cancer. He spent his final days surrounded by children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who gathered from across the country to be by his side. Douglas was born in Bakersfield, California to George and Irene Hancock Simons. He graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1955, before enlisting in the US Navy at the age of 17. He served on the USS Essex aircraft carrier in the Pacific. After serving his country, Douglas returned home to attend Bakersfield College, eventually transferring to Fresno State College where he earned his bachelor's and his master's degree in social work. Doug dedicated his career to helping others, whether it was working in child protective services, serving as a family counselor, leading anger management classes, teaching at Bakersfield College and, finally, providing counseling services for his church family. Douglas is survived by his children Laura and husband Doug DelTondo, Teresa and husband Jeff Swiger, Jennifer and husband Carl Schroeder and Douglas Simons, Jr. and his wife Julie, thirteen grandchildren and a growing crop of great grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the Kern City Town Hall, 1003 Pebble Beach Dr. Burial services are private. www.bakersfield.com/obits
