1925 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Dennie was born June 20, 1925, and passed away on September 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen; sons, Gerald, Steve, Mike; and daughter-in-law, Gayle McNutt. He is survived by his daughters, Anita, Debby, and Melanie; his son, Cary; and daughters- and sons-in-law, Charlotte, Bernice, Gary, and Rod; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Dennie served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Sirius stationed at Midway Island. He manned the 5"/38 guns. In June of 1942, the USS Sirius transported survivors of the sunken Japanese aircraft carrier, the Hiryu, from Midway Island to Pearl Harbor. In 1944 while on leave, he met and married Helen Armstrong. One year later, he was honorably discharged from the Navy.
He went to work for a small oil company that later became part of Standard Oil. Living in Bakersfield, he worked for the company and raised a family of seven children and retired many years later. He and Helen were married 54 years until her death in 1998. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing and continued to do so well into his 80s. "Papa" will be missed by his family and his beloved companion dog, "Queenie." At age 91, he passed peacefully, having lived a long and full life.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21st; and graveside service will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, September 22nd, at Greenlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park Northeast, 3700 River Blvd.
