Eddie Coberly Obituary

Eddie "Ed" Wayne Coberly 1944 - 2010 Eddie "Ed" Wayne Coberly was born February 26, 1944, in Woodlake, California to Velma and Wayne Coberly. Ed grew up in the McFarland area and was involved with the FFA and a family owned business. Ed joined the service and served his Country honorably. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne and in the 1st Cavalry Divison. He was the first chief gunner on the Armored ACH-47A Chinook "Easy Money" helicopter, affiliated with the original 53rd Aviation Detachment, "Guns A Go-Go." During the Vietnam War, Ed earned five air medals with valor and The Army Commendation medal for extraordinary heroism. He took great pride in serving his country. He was honorably discharged in November of 1968, and soon after married Cheryl "Sherry" Ann Kirker of Paso Robles, California. In 1975, Ed and Sherry moved to Bakersfield, California with their four children, Jerry, Robert, Lisa, and Pamela. He worked in the oilfield industry from 1975 to 2003. His interests included aviation, hot rods, researching his family history, and his veteran associations. Ed really enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife of 39 years. He loved being with his family and dogs, but what brought him the most joy was his grandkids. He was an honest, hardworking, frugal, dependable, strong-willed, and loyal man. Ed's battle with pancreatic cancer began in May of 2009. Special thanks to James S. Tomlinson M.D. of U.C.L.A., for his expertise enabling Ed sixteen memorable months with his family. Thank you Dream Foundation and Christina Bohannon Photography for beautiful memories with Ed during his last days. On October 1st, Ed Coberly passed away in his home under the care of Hoffmann Hospice. He was ushered into Heaven surrounded by his loving family. He fought to survive cancer, just as hard as he fought for his country with everything he had to give; his life. Memorial service for Ed will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 10, 2010, at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. Bakersfield, CA 93306. www.bakersfield.com/obits

Mrs. Coberly and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Ed at Aera Energy. I'm now disappointed that I didn't keep in touch more often. Ed was a hero and deserves great recognition for what he gave back to our country. God bless you and your family!
