Edith Merle Buchanan Obituary
Edith Merle Buchanan December 8, 1912 - September 1, 2012 Edith Merle Buchanan was born in Winnebago, Minnesota; the second of four children born to Jacob and Hilda LaMonte. The family lived in the Midwest until early in the Great Depression, when they moved to California. There she met the love of her life, Wilfred Fuller Buchanan, aka "Buck" and they were married in 1938. They had four children and the family finally settled in Bakersfield, CA in 1952, where Edith remained for the rest of her life. In 1978, when Edith was 65, her husband Buck passed away. But, Edith continued to be very active for another 34 years. She had a heart for people, with particular emphasis on those in need. She loved her church, Green Acres Baptist Church, (now Grace Baptist Church), and led and participated in countless fundraisers for the mission ministry of her church. She visited several shut-ins weekly for many years, and also offered rides to people who didn't have transportation to church. She did this well into her 90's. Edith and Don Sheldon were instrumental in bringing Habitat for Humanity to Bakersfield, and she continued to remain an active participant for the remainder of her life. Her passion for playing Scrabble and having a piece of chocolate and one Pepsi a day were well known, even until just a few weeks before she passed on. The family wishes to express thanks to Agape Home Care and Hoffman Hospice for their tender care in her final weeks. Edith was also preceded in death by her brother Tom LaMonte, and her sister Betty Insco. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Winfrey, her son Bill and wife Ruth Buchanan, her daughter Susan and husband Victor Salcedo, her son Bruce Buchanan, and her daughter Janet Dunham. She also leaves behind her grand-children Jennifer Payne and husband John, John Hammon and wife Julie, Paul Hammon, Scott Buchanan, Doug Buchanan, and Krista Buchanan; eight great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces and their children, as well. After almost 100 years here on earth; she now has eternity to spend with her Lord Jesus Christ. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at Grace Baptist Church , 2550 Jewetta Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93312 at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 8, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, or Grace Baptist Church. www.bakersfield.com/obits
