Ehla Jo Triplett Obituary
Ehla Jo Triplett, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 17, 2015. She passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, CA.
Born on Jan. 2, 1925 in Healdton, OK, to Otho and Cora (Elrod) Hutchens, she was the youngest of the couple's surviving 11 children. Jo attended elementary and high school in Ardmore, OK. A child of the Great Depression, Jo worked at Woolworth's during her school years.
After graduating from high school during WWII, Jo went to work at the Douglas Tulsa plant as a secretary.
In Tulsa, she met Dan Wesley Gilbert at church. He was a guest preacher and she was singing in the choir.
They were married in Ardmore in 1944 and moved to California. They lived first in Palos Verdes, then Claremont, where their 4 children were born.
After the death of her husband, Dan, in 1962, Jo went to Chaffey College to get her AA degree, followed by a real estate Broker's License.
In 1972, she moved to Newport Beach where she worked at Select Income Properties and McCombs Securities until she retired in 1985 to marry John Thomas Triplett of San Dimas, CA. She was widowed again in 1997, but continued to live in San Dimas until 2010 when she moved to Bakersfield to be closer to her son, Greg, and his family.
A woman of unshakeable faith, Jo volunteered in numerous positions during the 64 years she attended Pomona First Baptist Church where she was a long time member of the Mariner's Sunday School class.
She also served on the Board of Directors of The American Children's Home in Los Angeles.
Jo was an avid gardener who especially loved to grow beautiful flowers, from orchids to roses.
While she lived in Claremont, Jo was a member of The Lady Anglers and enjoyed many years of deep sea fishing. Her last catch (and release) was a white marlin, off the coast of Venezuela in 1999.
Ehla Jo was preceded in death by her parents, all 10 of her siblings, her first husband, Daniel Wesley Gilbert, her second husband, John Thomas Triplett, her daughter, Gretchen Gilbert Mixon Bittner Stokes and her grandson, Torr Mixon.
She is survived by her children: Greg (Susan) Gilbert of Bakersfield, Gena Gilbert (Dave) O'Neil of San Francisco and Dan Gilbert of Mission Viejo. Grandchildren: Tarone (Bernadette) Bittner of Davis, Damien Bittner of San Francisco, Brandon (Christie) Bittner of Claremont, Morgan Gilbert of Bakersfield, Danielle Gilbert of Orange and Jacqueline Gilbert of Hermosa Beach.
