bakersfield.com/obits Ellen L. Smith March 9, 1923 - June 25, 2013 Ellen Lucille Sears was born in Riviera, Texas on March 9, 1923. When Ellen was 12, her family moved to Bakersfield where she attended local schools. When she was attending Kern Union High School, Ellen moved in with a girl friend and supported herself with a job as a hatcheck girl at the Bakersfield Inn. She met and married Aron Arthur Smith on March 31, 1943. For a short time, Ellen was a "riveter" helping in the war effort. When their first child, Christine, was born, Ellen became a full time homemaker. They moved to Arizona where Aron was an aircraft mechanic. After the war, Aron and Ellen moved back to Bakersfield where their son, Larry, was born. Ellen loved to bowl. Her five women bowling team won the WIBC tournament title in Las Vegas in 1973. Ellen loved the holidays and cooking! She was an excellent cook and routinely prepared more food than the table would hold! Ellen loved her family and doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren. After Aron died in 2010, Ellen moved to memory care at Glenwood Gardens. The family would especially like to thank Julie and her staff at Glenwood Gardens memory care for their excellent and loving care of Ellen or as they called her "Beautiful". Ellen is survived by; daughter, Christine Enns and son, Larry Smith and wife, Rosalie; granddaughter, Suzanne Hylton and husband Michael all of Bakersfield; granddaughter, Andrea Wilhelm and husband Albert, great granddaughters, Gillian and Lucy Wilhelm all of Fresno and sister, Edna Wayne of Bakersfield. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, June 27th, 4-8 pm and a Chapel Service will be held on Friday, June 28th, 1:30 pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd.
