Elwood G. Leapley Obituary
Elwood G. Leapley February 7, 1920 - October 16, 2012 Called BUSS by friends and named PAPA by family Born to James and Ruth Leapley in Sioux City, Iowa, Buss passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, CA on October 16, 2012. He is now reunited in heaven with the love of his life, Genevieve, and his oldest grandson Zachary James Horton. Buss proudly served his country with the United States Army in WWII battling on the beaches of Normandy. After many Citations and Declarations with the Army Buss came home to complete his education with an Administrative Masters Degree in Education at the University of South Dakota. Wanting to transplant his family to California he applied as far north as the snow line to as far south as the border landing a position with the Kern High School District. He taught history and government for 35 years at Bakersfield High School. He then spent this retirement as an untiring force for the American Veterans. Active in the American Legion until his passing, Buss was a proud American. He was instrumental in the building of the "Hill of Valor" at Hillcrest where he will join his wife at rest. Buss and Genevieve were staunch Democrats, Union Supporters, Devout Catholics and sports fans, especially of the Lakers. Right up until the end Papa would have Helen read him all the football scores namely BHS Drillers... Once a Driller, always a Driller! Papa was greatly respected and loved. Family was always first. He was our center, our strength! Giving us hope and giving us guidance as our family's FATHER. Taught us to read and to say I love you he will be deeply missed by daughter, Helen Horton (Michael); son, Gary; granddaughter, Genevieve Graber (TJ); grandson, Tyler; great grand children, Tristan, Theresa, Bradley and Johnathan. WE the Leapley family would like to thank the Hallmark of Bakersfield and Hoffmann Hospice for their diligent and loving care of our Father, Papa. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Oct. 21, 2012 at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles Street). Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Oct. 22, 2012 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
