Emi Kumataka Obituary
Emi Kumataka February 7, 1918 - May 18, 2012 Emi was born on February 7, 1918 in Alpaugh, CA to immigrant farmers Misa and Einosuke Misono. She was the third of eight children and was very close to her family throughout her life. After high school she attended sewing-design school in Fresno where she met Lloyd Kumataka from nearby Parlier. They were married in Las Vegas in 1941 and, because of the relocation of Japanese order of 1942, spent their early married years moving around the country working in various occupations. They lost their first child, Michele, in Colorado and their first son, Doug, was born in Michigan. Returning to California in 1946, they had Jan in Fresno and Mark and Dennis in Bakersfield, where they were again close to family and grateful to have their first real home. When we lost Lloyd in 1993 we found comfort in remembering that he and Emi had enjoyed the frequent and close companionship of family and their Japanese church community friends, many entertainments, treats and vacations - the ingredients they had given their children to make a happy childhood - throughout their long life in Bakersfield. Emi, closely companioned by son Dennis, sister Nob, and her beloved Philo, continued to be active and travelled for family visits and occasions often; her last major trip was to attend granddaughter Annie's wedding in Hawaii when she was 88. She held her great grandson Gabriel at her 90th birthday party, surrounded by her beloved grandchildren. With kindness, care and concern, very good habits, great cooking, quiet strength and a lively spirit, Emi shared her love generously - both with her helping hands and her pleased to be with you smile. She will be missed by sister Nobu Torii, children Doug and his wife Carol, Jan, Mark and his wife Leann, and Dennis, grandchildren Cory, Annie, Emi, Kelly and Grant, great grandson Gabriel and her many other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Sat., July 7 at 11:30 at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara, 1100 Truxtun Ave. www.bakersfield.com/obits
