Esther Larma

Esther Larma Obituary
Esther was born on March 29, 1922, in Peabody, Kansas, and passed away peacefully on her 92nd birthday in Bakersfield. The eldest of six children born to Bessie and Jacob Friday, the family moved to Taft, Ca. while Esther was still a baby. With the death of Jacob in 1933 and Bessie in 1937, it fell upon fifteen year old Esther to keep the family together. Jacob was a member of the Moose Lodge, and through the generosity of the Taft Lodge, funds were raised to send all six children to Mooseheart orphanage outside Rockford, Ill. Esther, her sister and four brothers, the youngest of which was four, boarded the train in Bakersfield for the long trip to Illinois with bags of sandwiches provided for their meals. Esther returned to Bakersfield in 1942 and married Robert Larma in 1943. She had a long career in retail, working at Sears, Montgomery Ward and Valley Office. She was an accomplished musician, playing piano in her husband's dance band for many years, and was a founding member of the Music Gals service club, serving a term as president.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bob and her brother Bill Friday. She is survived by her sister Betty Morris, brothers Dr. Jack Friday, Bob and Ron Friday, daughter Virginia Hughes (Bob), son James Larma (Susan), grandchildren Brian Hughes (Gloria), Jamie Groves (Shawn), Jeff Larma, and great-grandchildren Samantha and Joshua Groves, Grace Larma and Zyanya Hughes.
Funeral services will be held on April 16, 2014 at 10:45 A.M. at the Bakersfield National Cemetery.
